MELBOURNE, Florida — Today at approximately 1:55 p.m., a sixteen-year-old high school student from Eau Gallie High School was struck by a Brevard County school bus at the intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Commodore Boulevard.
According to Melbourne Police, the student was properly crossing Eau Gallie Boulevard from north to south in the marked crosswalk. The school bus was turning from Commodore Boulevard onto Eau Gallie Boulevard to go west.
When the school bus turned onto Commodore Boulevard, the right front panel of the bus struck the student and knocked her to the ground.
The front bus tire then went over the student’s left foot. The bus driver was not aware that the student had been struck and continued on the pre-planned bus route.
A witness to the incident called Melbourne Police dispatch and followed the bus until it could be stopped by patrol officers.
An investigation was conducted by the Melbourne Police Department traffic unit and the at-fault bus driver was cited for violation of right of way.
The student was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries and released to her parents.
