Palm Bay Teen Arrested For Arson

PALM BAY, Florida — Palm Bay Police and Fire Investigators have arrested a 14-year-old boy for starting a brush fire that subsequently damaged a home earlier this week.  Mathew Darren Lusk of Palm Bay Florida faces felony charges of intentional burning of land and arson.

On Wednesday, Palm Bay firefighters responded to the area of West Oaks Park on Lamplighter Drive for a reported brush fire.  The fire spread and ignited a propane tank next to a home located at 1179 Ipswitch Street NW.  The fire spread to the side of the house and into the attic causing approximately $25,000 damage.

The investigation yielded several witnesses who were able to identify Lusk at the scene of the fire.   Lusk, who lives one block away from the fire scene,  was subsequently interviewed and, according to Palm Bay Police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez, he confessed.   “He set the fire with a lighter and he has history of setting fires in the past in other places he has lived,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Ron Bailey.  “He gave no reason why but juveniles boys at this age usually start fires for excitement.”

Palm Bay Fire-Rescue worked closely with police to resolve the case.  There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
