Merritt Island Pedestrian Hit, Killed In Sharpes

SHARPES, Florida – A Merritt Island man did not survive the injuries he sustained after being hit by a vehicle near the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Williams Point Boulevard in Sharpes, Florida around 6:45 on Sunday, December 15, 2019.

66-year-old Don Whidden of Cocoa, Florida was driving a 200 Ford pickup truck southbound on U.S. Highway 1.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, it is unknown if the pedestrian was crossing U.S. Highway 1 or just standing in the roadway.

The front of the Ford then struck the 62-year-old man.

The pedestrian was transported to Rockledge Regional Medical Center where he later died.

FHP has not released the man’s identity pending next-of-kin notification.

The driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, according to FHP reports.

A toxicology report for the pedestrian is pending.

The crash remains under investigation.
