2ND UPDATE: The escaped inmate was arrested, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office reported.
UPDATE: The stolen DOC truck was recovered at the clubhouse in Countryside of Vero Beach, 8775 20th Street.
Deputies and Detectives determined that Howton-McLaughlin entered his mother’s home while she was gone and changed clothes.
Howton-McLaughlin was observed on video wearing blue jeans, a blue collared shirt, and black sneakers.
He was last seen running east of Countryside into the wooded area.
The inmate is believed to still be on foot in the Indian River County area. Howton-McLaughlin is known to frequent homeless camps in the western portion of the county.
An overnight search in conjunction with the Okeechobee Correctional Institute bloodhounds continues.
A manhunt is underway in Brevard, Okeechobee, Indian River, Saint Lucie, Highlands, Polk, and Osceola counties for an escaped Florida inmate.
On the afternoon of Thursday, January 23, Florida Department of Corrections security staff at the Okeechobee Correctional Institution Work Camp located at 3420 N.E. 168th Street in Okeechobee, Florida discovered that an inmate had escaped while working on his outside work squad assignment.
An immediate lockdown and full count of the facility was conducted, and one inmate was discovered missing from his assigned location, along with an FDC vehicle.
FDC has contacted all state and local law enforcement officials who are coordinating a large-scale search effort focusing on highways and roads in the multi-county region.
If anyone sees the escaped inmate, do not approach and call 911 immediately.
Residents and motorists within the search area may see additional law enforcement presence, including helicopters, while every effort is made to recapture this inmate. Residents should exercise caution.
The Florida Department of Corrections’ says that its number one priority is public safety and that escapes are extremely rare.
The escaped inmate, Timothy L. Howton-McLaughlin, is a 28-year-old white male with green eyes and short brown hair.
He is 5’ 09” tall, weighs 150 pounds, and has an athletic build.
He has tattoos on his stomach.
He is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence for trafficking in stolen property and burglary.
The inmate is suspected to be driving a 1995 white Ford F-150 pickup truck with a black pipe rack over the bed and cab, license plate DC7636.
