Per a City of Palm Bay press release:
(Palm Bay)–A newspaper delivery man calling police to report suspicious activity ended up launching an investigation that stopped 5 suspected burglars in the middle of an apparent crime spree. The citizen, who wishes to remain anonymous, was in the area of Myakka St. NE and Hunan St. NE at approximately 3 a.m. when he noticed two black males on foot. The citizen approached the males and asked them if they needed assistance. The males advised the gentleman they did not. A short time later as the newspaper deliveryman continued his route, he heard a car alarm sounding in the immediate area where he just encountered the two males. The citizen called police to report the activity.
Responding officers immediately located a suspect who fled on foot and was later captured. Through coordinated efforts among road patrol officers additional suspects were located in the area. Further investigation lead to the arrests of five suspects who face charges in connection with multiple vehicle burglaries in the area. “We believe they were on a crime spree that involved many victims,” said Detective Lewis Jones. “We were able to recover a significant amount of stolen property and are in the process of attempting to identify victims.”
The suspects targeted unlocked vehicles and stole mostly electronic devices and other items that were readily available. The investigation revealed the suspects were driving through the Lockmar community searching for unlocked vehicles. The suspects admittedly avoided homes with motion activated exterior lighting and vehicles with locked doors. A backpack with stolen items was recovered after it had been tossed in a canal.
