Merritt Island House Fire Possibly Due To Lightning Strike

(Brevard County, FL)- At 8:33 p.m. this evening, Brevard County Fire Rescue received a 911 call for a possible structure fire at 2645 Raintree Lake Circle.  The 911 call was made by a neighbor at the homeowner’s request.  The homeowner reported heavy rains and lightning in the area at the time of the fire and told officials he believed a lightning strike may have sparked the fire.
Truck 41 arrived on scene and after a short investigation, located a fire in the attic space of an addition to the primary residence described as a “gazebo.”  The addition was located in the rear of the home near a pool.  Fire crews immediately stretched lines to the rear of the home and began an aggressive attack on the fire.  Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 13 minutes and began extensive mop-up and salvage operations.
An investigation in ongoing by an inspector from Brevard County Fire Rescue however preliminary results show that the fire was electrical in nature.  Investigators have not been able to rule out the possibility of a lightning strike to the home that may have contributed to the ignition of the fire.
According to officials, fire damage is estimated at $20,000.  Because the main living area of the home was unaffected, the homeowner will be able to remain in the home.  The home was equipped with working smoke alarms.  No injuries were reported.
