COCOA, Florida — A 19-year-old woman from Cocoa is in critical condition after a vehicle crash this afternoon on State Road 528 near mile-marker 31. The Florida Highway Patrol has not released her identity pending notification to her next-of-kin.
According to FHP, the woman was driving westbound on S.R. 528 in the outside lane when her 2002 Dodge 4-door lost control, crossing the inside westbound lane, going off the paved roadway, and onto the gassy median, where it went through the cable guardrail, and into the path of Melbourne resident Theodore H. Jenkin’s 2008 Dodge SUV which was headed westbound on S.R. 528.
79-year-old Jenkins attempted to avoid the crash by changing lanes. The 4-door continued out of control crossing onto the outside lane where it collided into Jenkin’s SUV at approximately 2:37 p.m.
The Cocoa woman was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center while Jenkins, who suffered minor injuries, was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.
The crash scene caused eastbound State Road traffic to back up for hours Saturday afternoon.
This crash remains under investigation.
