Deputy Shot and Killed In Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Florida  — Law enforcement descended to the Cypress Bend subdivision area after shots were fired in Melbourne today.
Initially, police were called for a stolen property complaint on Elena Way and North John Rhodes Boulevard.  While being chased by a helicopter and cruisers from both the Melbourne Police Department and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, a suspect overturned his vehicle on Turtle Mound Road during the pursuit.
A female Brevard County Sheriff’s deputy was  transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center due to injuries arising out of the incident.  The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is now confirming that the deputy did not survive her wounds.
Nearby Melbourne resident Tony Webster said, “I heard several gunshots at approximately 11:30 am and this sounded like about 8 rounds from a semi-automatic weapon.  Subsequently, there was about 10 minutes of steady sirens from police and other emergency vehicles.”

Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker is scheduled to make a statement at 3:30 p.m. today.

Media are not being permitted near the scene.
