Melbourne Police Hospitalized After Car Crash
MELBOURNE, Florida — On Friday March 30, 2012 at approximately 2:15 A.M., two Melbourne police officers were involved in a traffic crash on Aurora Road at Citrus Street. The officers were on routine patrol riding in the same unmarked vehicle traveling westbound on Aurora Road. They were in the inside lane approaching Citrus Street.
According to the Melbourne Police Department, a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis, traveling eastbound on Aurora, attempted to turn north onto Citrus. The Grand Marquis’ driver, identified as Thomas Chappelle, 23 of Melbourne, cut the turn short placing the Mercury into the path of the officers’ vehicle. This caused a head on collision. Both officers were injured in the crash and were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida. They sustained injuries to their extremities and are still hospitalized at this time.
The Florida Highway Patrol conducted the investigation and found Chappelle at fault.
The Melbourne Police Department is currently investigating this incident.
