DELTONA, Florida — They considered him a trusted friend of the family. But police say 30-year-old John Loftis of Deltona had other ideas that involved a 13-year-old girl. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation two weeks ago after the girl confided in her mother that 31-year-old Loftis had forced her to have sex on two different occasions back in December.
According to investigators with the Sheriff’s Office’s Sex Crimes Unit, one assault occurred in Loftis’ car after he had picked up the girl to take her back to his house. Along the way, Loftis pulled into a wooded area in DeBary and attacked the girl. The victim said she was screaming during the assault and even bit one of Loftis’ fingers when he covered her mouth to muffle her cries. The other assault took place at Loftis’ house. During an interview, the victim said she had considered Loftis a trusted friend, but that he had betrayed her trust by having sex with her.
During the investigation, Loftis implicated himself when he offered to take the girl for a pregnancy test. He also offered to give her money if she needed it and told her that if it turned out that she was pregnant, she should lie to her mother and tell her she was having sex with another boy and the condom broke. On Tuesday, investigators with the Sex Crimes Unit obtained an arrest warrant issued by Circuit Court Judge Robert K. Rouse, Jr. charging Loftis with two counts of lewd or lascivious assault on a child. Loftis turned himself in on Friday to investigators with the Sex Crimes Unit. He was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach and booked in on $10,000 bond.
