Easter Surfing Festival Day 1: 'Lake Atlantic'

COCOA BEACH, Florida — Cocoa Beach demonstrated that it truly is the small wave capitol of the world on the first day of the 2012 Easter Surfing Festival on Friday.

Crowds had gathered all along Cocoa Beach by mid-day at both the Cocoa Beach Pier and Shepard Park for the Festival.  However, a line of thunderstorms with cloud to ground lightning caused many to leave the beach by 1:30 p.m.  The mass exodus from the beaches at the same time swelled the already congested State Road A1A.

By 2 p.m., the rain had stopped.  A good wind from the west helped to build waves to just over 3 feet as surfers struggled to get the few ‘decent’ swells that came there way.

Junior skateboarders had a better day on the half pipe.
Today, there will be bigger waves – but much choppier than yesterday.
