Fire Destroys Canaveral Groves Home

COCOA, Florida –  According to Brevard County Fire Rescue Lieutenant Jeffrey Taylor, fire destroyed a double-wide mobile home in Canaveral Groves today, leaving a pair homeless and searching for answers.  The fire was reported this afternoon at 12:28 p.m.  The home is located near the intersection of Camp Road and Dowling Circle.

The homeowners, a 34 year-old-male and his 33-year-old fiancee, told officials that the fire began when no one was home.  The home is not insured and is considered a total loss.  The pair denied Red Cross assistance and plan to stay with family or friends in the area while they regroup.

No injuries were reported in the fire, though the couple’s pit bull is still unaccounted for.

“Neighbors said they saw him jump out the front windows and run-off down the street,” said the female homeowner.  “We don’t have any kids, he’s my kid.”

Firefighters say that when they arrived on scene, heavy fire was visible from the front windows, rear of the home, and was running under the entire length of the structure.  Firefighters entered the home to attack the fire – but were driven out quickly as the heat and flames inside the home became intolerable.  A defensive fire attack was quickly established once all residents were accounted for.  It took crews nearly an hour to extinguish the blaze.

Investigators from Brevard County Fire Rescue and the State Fire Marshal’s Office were called to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire.  The State Fire Marshal’s Office will be the lead agency in the investigation because the home is on state-owned property.
