COCOA, Florida – Brevard County Fire Rescue (BCFR) and Cocoa Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire at 6726 Dyson Avenue in West Cocoa early this morning. A 911 call was received at 3:53 a.m. reporting a mobile home on fire with possibly one person trapped inside.
Firefighters arrived on scene and found a double-wide mobile home fully involved in fire. The names and ages of the residents were not provided. A small detached shed near the mobile home also suffered heat and fire damage.
Officials say limited access to the property and an insufficient water supply in the area were issues. The home is situated on a narrow, dirt road. With no fire hydrants available in the area, firefighters positioned a primary “attack” engine, then rotated “supply” engines to the scene to provide water. The supply engines acted as mobile fire hydrants.
“Fortunately, the couple who lived at the home were both able to escape the structure uninjured,” said BCFR Public Information Lieutenant Jeffrey Taylor. “While firefighters are well-trained on this type of operation, it took coordination and good communication skills to rotate the apparatus in the limited space available.”
Fire inspectors have been called to the scene to determine what may have caused the fire. The Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance for the residents. Officials say that the home is a total loss and were working to find out if the home was insured.
