MERRITT ISLAND, Florida — The Space Shuttle Endeavour was powered down for the final time at 9:58 a.m. EDT on May 11, 2012 in Orbiter Processing Facility-2 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
Over the course of its 19-year career, Endeavour spent 299 days in space during 25 missions. Endeavour is being prepared for public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California.
Its piggy-back ride on top of a a modified 747 ferry flight to California is targeted for mid-September, 2012. This will be the last time a Space Shuttle flies over Florida’s Space Coast.
Meanwhile, in Orbiter Processing Facility-1 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians continue with the removal and re-installation of shuttle Atlantis’ windows. Technicians are also in the process of removing engine liquid hydrogen feedlines from the orbiter.
Atlantis is being prepared for public display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Brevard County, Florida and is scheduled to roll over to the complex in November.
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is targeting a July 2013 grand opening for Atlantis’ new home.
