VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida — The Florida Highway Patrol is reporting that three people have died as a result of injuries they recieved in traffic accident on I-95 that occurred near the Volusia County / Flagler County line at 7:40 a.m. on Sunday.
FHP says that a 1997 Dodge 15-passenger van was traveling northbound on I-95. The driver told FHP troopers that the van suffered a tire separation that caused the driver to lose control. The van overturned several times, ejecting many of the van’s passengers.
Two men and one woman died on the scene. FHP has only identified one of the men so far, 57-year-old Vilbrun Bertrand of West Palm Beach, Florida. Two other adult passengers were taken to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida in critical condition while nine other adult passengers were transported to four local hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.
FHP has not released the names of the other passengers pending notification of next-of-kin.
The van’s occupants are Haitian migrant farm workers who were traveling to New Jersey to work and FHP says that troopers are facing a language barrier in gathering personal information from the occupants.
This crash remains under investigation.
