PORT CANAVERAL, Florida — This is the 18th year that the Florida Wildlife Commission, the Canaveral Port Authority, and the Florida Sport Fishing Association have sponsored a Kid’s Fishing Clinic at the Port which takes place this year on Saturday, June 30, 2012.
Every year, hundreds of kids and their parents/guardians come out to the Port for a day of education, fishing, a fun. In 2011, there were 427 kids who attended. The event opens at 9:00 AM at Cruise Terminal #4 on the South Side of the Port.
Kids will be admitted in groups of about 20 for an introduction to knot-tying, tackle familiarity, and stewardship of our natural resources. After that, they are introduced to the basics of casting and then given a rod and reel and set out on the cruise terminal dock with bait and volunteers standing by to try to catch “the big one”. All fish caught are released. Hot dogs and soft drinks are also provided. There is no cost whatsoever to the participants and they may take their rod and reel home with them. There will be enough rods and reels for the first 600 participants. There will be signs on George King Boulevard directing participants to the event.
