Melbourne To Demolish Two Water Storage Tanks

MELBOURNE, Florida — Plans are underway for the removal of two elevated water storage tanks that the City of Melbourne says are no longer needed as part of Melbourne’s drinking water distribution.  The tanks, located off Palm Avenue in Indialantic, Florida, and off Oak Street in Melbourne, Florida, have been in use for decades to provide storage and to maintain water pressure.

“In recent years, the City has added ground storage tanks and booster pumps to enhance the water distribution system,” said Ralph Reigelsperger, City of Melbourne public works and utilities director.  “The improvements have rendered some of the elevated storage tanks functionally obsolete.”

Changes to the distribution system have been underway for several years.  The City hopes to avoid the high cost of renovating the two elevated tanks that are to be removed.  Another pair of other elevated tanks were previously dismantled and carried away.  Just one pair of the traditional storage tanks will remain in place when the new demolitions are completed.

Reigelsperger added that the work to identify a company to dismantle the tanks before the end of the 2012 will follow after the removal of antenna structures on the tanks by the end of August 2012.  The City had leased antenna locations to cell phone companies and a radio station, but provided notice last year to those parties that the leases could not be renewed.
