MERRITT ISLAND, Florida — The Florida Highway Patrol is reporting that a pedestrian was struck and killed on State Road 3 (Courtney Parkway) in Merritt Island, Florida around 8:50 p.m. last night.
The pedestrian was crossing State Road 3 near Spruce Avenue while a 2012 Toyota Scion, driven by Colett Daignault of Merritt Island, was traveling northbound on State Road 3. FHP says that the pedestrian walked into the path of the Scion. The pedestrian has yet-to-be-identified pending next-of-kin notification.
FHP says that alcohol was not a factor as to Daignault who was also wearing her seat belt. However, FHP is still investigating whether the accident was alcohol related as to the pedestrian.

And her seatbelt had what to do with this accident? How about weather if she was speeding or texting? Small 2 lane road how could he not see her car approaching, it would have been dark, did she have her lights on?
Good thought about the seat belt. Courtenay is not a small 2-lane raod at Spruce Avenue, it is 4-lane. Texting and speed are good questions. Courtenay Parkway should be renamed Courtenay Speedway.
Another comment for this reporter, the person was not killed "in" Merritt Island, but rather "on" Merritt Island.
It's tragic no matter what. As for her having her lights on...that car is equipped with daytime runnimg lights so they are on all the time. Does it matter whether it happened "on" or "in" Merritt Island? This poor person was killed and this poor girl has to live with this the rest of her life.
Just so everyone knows, it was dark and the pedestrian was not in a cross walk... which wasn't very smart seeing that they had a shopping cart full of groceries (or something else). I don't know for sure because it was dark and very stress full. We were driving north on Courtney when it happened right in front of us. Pedestrian's have the right of way but that doesn't mean they should abuse it. The driver is probably traumatized and the pedestrian is dead so lets not ostracize anyone.
