FIT Fraternities, Sororities Make Top 20 Ranking

MELBOURNE, Florida—Florida Institute of Technology’s Greek life rates high, it may be inferred, with seven chapters on campus of the national fraternities and sororities featured favorably in Newsweek and The Daily Beast’s College Rankings 2012.

The annual report ranks the top 25 colleges across the nation in several different categories including Most Affordable, Most Beautiful, Most Stressful and Most Rigorous. The report also ranks the best national fraternities and sororities.

The ranking for top fraternities in the nation was based upon four main categories: active collegiate chapters, number of congressional alumni, number of presidential alumni and funds donated to 501(c)(3) organizations.

Alpha Tau Omega (#18), Tau Kappa Epsilon (#16), Pi Kappa Alpha (#15) and Delta Tau Delta (#11), all represented by Florida Tech chapters, were in the top 20 named fraternities. These fraternities represent a total of 778 active collegiate chapters, 13 congressional alumni, one presidential alumni and have donated over $250,000.

The top 25 sororities were ranked according to the number of active collegiate chapters, Twitter followers, Facebook fans and funds donated to 501(c)(3) organizations. All three Greek sororities at Florida Tech made the top 20. They are Phi Sigma Sigma (#20), Gamma Phi Beta (#14) and Alpha Phi (#10). The three national sororities combine for a total of 391 active collegiate chapters, 22,000 Twitter followers, 48,000 Facebook fans and donated over $900,000.

FIT says that these Greek organizations are part of the reason why Florida Tech has been named for six consecutive years to the President’s Community Service Honor Roll.

In calendar year 2011, volunteers from Greek and other campus organizations assisted 51 local and national non-profit organizations through service and fundraising, collecting over $30,000. Greek Life, Residence Life, and the Campus Services Department led many of the on-campus service and philanthropy efforts.
