VIERA, Florida — A presentation regarding sibling preference in the admission of students to Brevard County schools of choice will be made at the Brevard County School Board meeting tonight at 5:30 p.m. located at 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way in Viera, Florida.
According to the agenda, the focus of the presentation is to provide the Board with an overview of a three-year historical analysis of sibling preference granted at five (5) choice schools in Brevard County. The choice schools include:
Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School,
West Shore Jr./Sr. High School,
Stevenson Elementary School of the Arts,
Freedom 7 Elementary School of International Studies, and
West Melbourne Elementary School for Science.
The presentation will also include information concerning the current District policy language in reference to sibling preference. The Board will receive the three-year historical analysis data prior to the School Board meeting.
Currently, a non-sibling student has around a 1 in 5 chance of being selected by lottery for admission to a Brevard County school of choice while siblings of students already admitted to that school of choice have a 100% chance of being admitted.
If the sibling preference was abolished, the presentation will show that all students would have roughly a 1 in 3 chance of being selected by lottery to a Brevard County school of choice..

If there's a lottery - how come they're not called "Schools of Chance...?
The cost of transportation should be very high on the list for selection.
