Brevard Courts, Buses Keep Running Friday

BREVARD COUNTY, Florida – The following Brevard County services may be affected by Hurricane Sandy:

• Most Space Coast Area Transit buses will run as normally scheduled on Friday unless conditions deteriorate throughout the day as a result of the movement of Hurricane Sandy off the east coast of Brevard County. “Customers need to be aware that fixed route service could be disrupted due to deteriorating weather conditions,” said Jim Liesenfelt, Director of Space Coast Area Transit. Space Coast Area Transit has canceled all contract routes, which include developmentally disabled adult service to Brevard Achievement Center, Bridges, Easter Seals and Seniors at Lunch bus service. All Volunteers in Motion service is also canceled. All non-dialysis paratransit customers were being contacted to check trip reservations for Friday/Saturday.

• Brevard Public Schools will be closed Friday. Child care and afterschool activities area canceled and will be rescheduled by individual schools. Questions have arisen concerning Saturday activities, such as ACT testing, field trips, training and athletic activities. Students scheduled to take the ACT at any Brevard school are encouraged to contact ACT for directions about test taking when weather conditions are poor. ACT can be reached at

www.actstudent.org or (319) 337-1510. Brevard Public Schools will update the community Friday afternoon regarding any proposed changes to scheduled Saturday events.

• A Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program Selection and Management Committee meeting scheduled for Friday has been postponed. A new meeting date has not been announced.

• Brevard Community College will be open for classes Friday and Saturday; however, daycare centers will be closed.

• Waste Management will be operating a normal pickup schedule Friday, but disruptions may result as a result of conditions stemming from Hurricane Sandy. Routes that are not completed on Friday will be finished on Saturday, according to Waste Management. Additional equipment will be used Saturday for yard waste collection and will be continued into next week.

• Kennedy Space Center is open on Friday.

• Brevard County Courts are open.
