NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Florida — “I got a gentleman shooting at me with a shotgun,” a shaken repo man told a Volusia County 911 operator Tuesday afternoon after an attempt to repossess a vehicle turned dangerous near New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
The repo men went to 1295 Whispering Pines Drive at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday and walked up to the house to talk to the residents about a repossession. But before the men could say anything, Scott Higdon appeared at the door and allegedly leveled a shotgun at them. The men immediately headed back to their tow truck and got inside. But then they heard a gunshot followed by a tree branch crashing to the ground. No one was injured during the confrontation.
The repo men drove to a nearby intersection, called 911 and waited for law enforcement help. A New Smyrna Beach police officer arrived first and started talking to the men. A moment later, Higdon drove up and the officer could plainly see the shotgun in the front passenger seat. Higdon was then secured by law enforcement and the shotgun was found to be loaded. Higdon was arrested by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shortly afterwards.
Higdon later told deputies that he had seen two men standing in his front yard, which prompted him to get his shotgun and walk to the front door with it. Deputies say Higdon admitted to firing a shot into the air and then following them in his car so as to find out who they were. When a deputy asked him why he didn’t contact law enforcement upon first seeing the men, Higdon allegedly replied, “Yeah, I guess I should have done that.”
Higdon was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
