Brevard School Closures on Cocoa Beach City Agenda

COCOA BEACH, Florida — A Resolution urging the Brevard County School Board to “keep Cocoa Beach students going to Cocoa Beach schools” will be before the Cocoa Beach City Commission at the December 6, 2012 meeting which begins at 7 p.m.
The draft of the Resolution follows:

RESOLUTION NO. 2012-31

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE BREVARD COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TO KEEP COCOA BEACH STUDENTS GOING TO COCOA BEACH SCHOOLS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHERAS, Residents move to Cocoa Beach because of its quality of life; and

WHERAS, the City of Cocoa Beach and its residents wish to express their sentiments to the Brevard County School Board to keep Cocoa Beach kids going to Cocoa Beach schools; and

WHEREAS, the City of Cocoa Beach recognizes that based on the November 20, 2012, School Board discussion, the current issue facing Roosevelt, is that Sea Park Elementary in Satellite Beach will be closing, that over 200 students will be going to Roosevelt, thus putting Roosevelt, in Cocoa Beach, over capacity and requiring the sending of 100 Roosevelt students to Cape View in Cape Canaveral; and

WHEREAS, the current proposed boundary line considered for Cape View will be 2nd Street North. This change to the boundary will mean that children, who currently live too close to be bused to Roosevelt (walkers/bikers/car riders,) will be required to attend Cape View; and

WHEREAS, the City of Cocoa Beach has invested in sidewalk infrastructure to accommodate kids walking to the schools.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF COCOA BEACH:

SECTION 1. That the City of Cocoa Beach urges the Brevard County School Board to continue to support keeping communities together, by ensuring that Cocoa Beach students attend Cocoa Beach schools.

SECTION 2: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.

Upon Motion by Commissioner and Seconded by Commissioner _______________, this Resolution is duly adopted at a Regular Meeting of the City Commission of the City of Cocoa Beach, Florida, held on the _____ Day of ___________________ 2012.

  • keep CB kids at their home school and change the line for seapark to two different schools. Why should CB kids have to move schools because another school was closed?

  • This is great that the City of Cocoa Beach is doing this. But urging our school district not to close Seapark and possibly other schools really going to solve the major problem of our school district that needs 25 million to 30 million dollars a year? Once again, what is our community going to do to solve this problem?Marcus
