Kennedy Space Center Called Pork In Sandy Relief

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — The Obama administration’s request for $4 million in the Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief package to repair damaged and eroded sand berms and dunes that protect NASA launch sites at Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and Kennedy Space Center in Florida has been dubbed a “Sandy Scam” by Fox News and other conservative websites.  The Drudge Report titled its link to a Sandy pork news article as “Obama ‘Sandy’ aid bill filled with holiday goodies unrelated to storm damage…”

After some criticism for not voting on Sandy aid sooner, the U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on its version of a Sandy Relief bill later today.

The uninhabited Atlantic shoreline along Kennedy Space Center is part of a larger wildlife ecosystem that is comprised of the Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.  The area is used by many species of migratory birds and other wildlife, many of which are considered endangered by the federal government.

The shoreline also borders the northern side of the mouth to Port Canaveral which is used by cruise, cargo, and U.S. Navy vessels, including nuclear submarines.
