Suspect Identified In Indialantic Deputy-Involved Shooting

INDIALANTIC, Florida — On January 13, 2013, at approximately 5:42 p.m., Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 700 North Shannon Avenue in Indialantic, Florida to assist the Indialantic Police Department who were investigating an aggravated assault which had just occurred.
According to a 911 call received by the Indialantic Police Department, the sole resident of the house had allegedly assaulted family members with a knife.  As the deputies and an Indialantic Police Officer attempted to make contact with the suspect, deputies say they were confronted by the suspect who was armed with a knife.  The deputies then responded to the threat by firing their duty weapons at the suspect who was struck and subsequently died at the scene.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office later identified the suspect as 49-year-old Christopher Greer, who resided at the 700 North Shannon address.

The deputies involved in the incident are Corporal Jim Haman and Deputy Diomedis Canela.  Both deputies are veterans of the Sheriff’s Office who are currently assigned on patrol at the South Precinct.

The death investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent and parallel investigation regarding the use of deadly force.

The deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. This is a common practice anytime a deputy is involved in a line-of-duty
shooting.
