Volusia Man Holds Burglars At Gunpoint

DELAND, Florida — “We got them, buddy,” a man who called 9-1-1 Monday night told a Volusia County Sheriff’s telecommunicator.  “They’ve got stolen stuff from my shop in the back of their car.”
The owner of a business near DeLand, Florida had staked out his own shop anticipating that thieves who had struck previously would be back and deputies say he was right.  The 64-year-old man armed with a shotgun allegedly caught the two suspects in the act of taking off with stolen metal, including a heavy wrecking ball, in their vehicle. “I don’t know how the hell they picked it up, it weighs over 200 pounds,” the caller said. “But yeah, they are definitely stealing and it’s in the car.”
The incident happened at West Crane Services located at 1640 Newport Avenue in DeLand at about 8:50 p.m.  The owner told deputies that the business had been burglarized the previous week, motivating the man to spend evenings there in anticipation of being targeted again.  He was with a friend when they heard a commotion outside.  Armed with a shotgun, the owner confronted the suspects who were in a vehicle about to flee.  He got them out of their Nissan SUV and detained them until deputies arrived. It was found that the pair had the wrecking ball and a large metal hook assembly in the back of the SUV.
Arrested were 28-year-old Ryan Moore and 27-year-old Scott Sasek. They were both charged with burglary and grand theft. Each man also faces a violation of probation charge. They were booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach, Florida.
