Karla Torpy New Director of Brevard County Animal Services

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Karla Torpy, formerly with the Melbourne law firm of Moletteire & Torpy, is the new Director of Brevard County Animal Services and Enforcement and received unanimous confirmation Tuesday from the Brevard County Board of Commissioners.

Torpy’s first day at the helm of Animal Services is Thursday.

Torpy, who spent 18 years practicing law in Brevard County, calls her new role an “essential mission to promote responsible pet ownership by promoting and protecting the health, safety and welfare of residents and animals in Brevard County.”

Assistant County Manager Mel Scott said Torpy is a consummate professional with a track record of integrity.

“Adjectives I heard while speaking to her references were, ‘well-spoken,’ ‘organized,’ ‘hard-working,’ ‘passionate’ and ‘extremely professional.’ These core values will be a real asset to the organization she’ll be joining,” Scott said. “She will be charged with continuing to move the shelters forward and broadening and strengthening the county’s investment in our community’s animals. Expect to see continued re-branding of our shelters taking place and increased community outreach.”

Assistant Department Director Kathy Beatson served as the Interim Director of Animal Services and Enforcement since July 2011.

  • I just saw a video from a Facebook posting by Jamie Clark and her brother Clayton Clark.I am beyond sickened by these monsters and the way they abused and killed a cage animal for the FUN OF IT..I can only Pray that Brevard County holds these children with the strongest sentence possible, prison is what I hope for, before these monsters start abusing people!!!!!mrnboll@yahoo.comLongmont CO 80501

  • Dear Ms. Torpy:I just saw the video made by Jamie Clark of her brother Clayton Clark, both of Brevard County, shooting a defenseless raccoon trapped in a cage. It was sickening. Even though this girl has removed the video from her facebook page, it is being circulated by CAUSES, an international online advocacy group which targets animal cruelty, and the video has now gone viral. People all over the world are seeing this video and I am more than ashamed that this atrocity occurred right here in our Brevard County. The action of these two young people is pathological. The cruelty of this act and the callousness with which it was carried out should not go unpunished. Animal Services and Brevard County Law Enforcement should respond to this incident immediately, not only for its inherent brutality and violation of Florida Wildlife Protection laws but also because such depraved behavior could easily be transposed to inflicting harm on people. Thank you for your immediate attention to this very important matter.Sincerely,Joni LowtherPalm Bay, FLopensable@yahoo.com
