MIMS, Florida — Firefighters from Brevard County Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service say they have contained a 10-acre brush fire near Wiley Road in Mims, Florida.
The fire, which was reported at 12:23 p.m., was touched off by a tractor that caught fire in an abandoned orange grove.
Officials say the fire is burning grass and dead orange trees in the grove. Variable winds, blowing at times in excess of 20 miles per hour, have caused a number of spot fires in the area. At one point, a small fire was reported burning beneath an abandoned mobile home but fire crews arrived quickly and doused the flames before the structure could sustain significant damage.
Fire crews will remain at the scene until nightfall, working to mop up hot spots and minimize the chances of a rekindle tomorrow. BCFR plans to return brush trucks to the area in the morning to continue mop up operations.
While the fire did burn in the area of homes and businesses, officials report no structures are threatened and all roadways remain open.
