Brevard County Bicyclist Killed By Melbourne Police Car

MELBOURNE, Florida — The Florida Highway Patrol is reporting that 53-year-old Richard Hill of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida died after being hit by a Melbourne police cruiser.

About 9:40 p.m. last night, Melbourne police officer Steven Linthicum was traveling eastbound in a Chevy Impala police cruiser on State Road 518 (Eau Gallie Boulevard) in the right lane on his way to a call.
Meanwhile, Hill was crossing the roadway near the intersection of Blue Bird Boulevard and S.R. 518 on his bicycle in a southeasterly direction.  FHP troopers determined that Hill traveled into the direct path of the police car and the front of the car struck the bicycle.  The impact caused Hill and his bicycle to be thrown to the ground.

Hill was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne where he was pronounced dead.

According to the FHP crash report, alcohol was not a factor in the accident and 33-year-old Linthicum was wearing his seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation.
