Brevard County Man Dies In Motorcycle Crash

MELBOURNE, Florida — The Florida Highway Patrol reported that 36-year-old William Mahlmeister, of Palm Bay, Florida, died as a result of injuries he sustained in a traffic accident Monday afternoon.

Mahlmeister was riding a 2002 Honda motorcycle eastbound in the outside lane of US 192 in Melbourne around 4:45 p.m.  Meanwhile, 51-year-old Kelly Painter of West Melbourne, Florida was driving a 1990 Ford Probe southbound on Nina Jean Drive.

According to FHP troopers, Painter attempted to travel across the eastbound and westbound lanes of US 192 and traveled into the direct path of the motorcycle.  Mahlmeister took evasive actions and applied the brakes. This caused the motorcycle to skid into the right side of the Probe.
Mahlmeister was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center from the scene where he later died.
According to the FHP report, Mahlmeister was not wearing a helmet and the accident was not alcohol related.

This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
