MERRITT ISLAND, Florida — A 2,349-acre brush fire on Merritt Island near Kennedy Space Center that forced the evacuation of KARS park is 95% contained as of this morning. The fire was doused with a half-inch of rain yesterday, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Firefighters will continue to work the fire through the weekend and minimal fire activity is expected.
The cause of the fire is believed to be from a lightning strike when thunderstorms rolled across Brevard County earlier this week.
The National Weather Service forecasts continuing showers today. However, no rain and 20 mph winds are forecast for Saturday.
