SEBASTIAN, Florida — A Sebastian River High School Senior, 18-year-old Kaitlyn “Kate” Hunt, was arrested for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old Sophomore who attended the same school.
According to Kate’s mother, who has created an online petition to ask the State Attorney to drop the charges, “The two girls began dating while Kaitlyn was 17 but her girlfriend’s parents blamed Kailtyn for their daughter’s homosexuality. They waited until after Kaitlyn turned 18 and went to the police to have charges brought against her.” Kate’s mother goes into greater detail of her side of the story on a “Free Kate” Facebook group: “At the beginning of this school year, she started dating a fellow student, who happened to be another female. This girl also played varsity sports, was in the IB program, so she was in classes with upperclassman… They were both students in the same high school, it was a mutual consenting relationship on both parts. This was unusual for Kate, she has always dated boys, but being the kind of mother I am, I didn’t want to make it a big deal. I talked to her about it, and figured it was just a social thing, times have changed and a lot of kids are experimenting, so I didn’t make much of it…
On Saturday February 16th, our family’s world was shattered and our daughter’s nightmare began. The police came to our home and arrested my daughter, put her in hand cuffs and we had no idea why. They refused to tell us anything at first because she had turned 18. Kate was ripped out of our arms, terrified, crying hysterically. My younger daughter was there at the time, my husband and myself, we were mortified. They finally told us she was being arrested on “probable cause.” I asked them probable cause of what, they said sexual battery on a person 12-16 years old. My heart dropped, I knew then that it had to have been her girlfriend’s parents. These people never came to us as parents, never tried to speak to us, didn’t try to get the school involved to speak to us and tell us they had a problem with the girls dating, not one single word. Instead, they set out their vengeance and had my child arrested on FELONY charges. The nightmare continued. Kate was bailed out and sat in front of a Judge. He told her she could continue going to school, but was to have no contact with her girlfriend. I went to the school and spoke to them, let them know what was going on, I wanted to make sure there was no issues or problems.
It is Kate’s senior year, she only had a few months until graduation and we wanted her to finish. The school was very supportive, they all know and loved Kate. They told us that the other girls parents had already come in and wanted Kate to be expelled, they told them no, they wouldn’t do that. The parents didn’t like that, so that petitioned the court and asked the judge to remove Kate from school, even though the Judge already ruled Kate could continue school. We sat in front of the Judge again, and the judge ruled yet again that Kate could continue going to school, he didn’t feel like Kate was any threat at all. Those parents wouldn’t give up. They were out to destroy my daughter, they feel like my daughter “made” their daughter gay. They are bigoted, religious zeolites that see being gay as a sin and wrong, and they blame my daughter. Of course I see it 100% different. I don’t see or label these girls as gay. They are teenagers in high school experimenting with their sexuality, all teens do it in one form or another. They are teens, its healthy and normal. And even if their daughter is gay, who cares, she is still their daughter.
But, the fight continued. the parents fought dirty, we pushed back and tried everything we could. I went to the school board with not one but two orders from Indian River County Judges saying Kate could continue going to school, but the school board sided with the parents, and expelled my daughter. Kate was forced to go to the alternative school. The school board made one concession and allowed Kate to attend her senior events like grad bash, and senior fun day at the school and she will be able to walk at her graduation at the high school and actually graduate from SRHS. But her senior year was ruined, she was taken away from her normal life, her friends and her school activities because of those parents.”

The fact that the kids are "gay" is irrelevant. The fact is that an 18yr old adult had relations with a minor child. She should have known better & so should have her parents.
The real problem here is that this was a consenting relationship, not in the slightest abusive. It's not a case of gays wanting a double standard, as similar cases have happened with 18 year old boys and 15 year old girls, also consenting. The only difference there is here, is how aggressive the other parents were in getting miss Hunt convicted. This being probably due to their religious orientation. I do not believe that a consenting relationship between an 18-19 year-old and a minor should be persecuted, especially given the fact that they were both still in high-school.In my opinion, a claim of sexual assault is not warranted by a difference of months, I have heard of multiple cases personally where a 18 year old and a 17 and 9 month year-old were separated due to "sexual assault of a minor."There are big things for us to worry about for our country people. This is not one of them.
FOr the dick up top, dating a person 3 years younger than you is not illegal. How is it going to be any different than when they are 21 and 18? Its not really. by 15 you kind of know who you are and your values and beliefs. not exactly, but you know somewhat of how things are. You are also hitting that age where you start to mature. how about lets draw a diferent line for this people. in this society, day, and age, people do this crap but worse. People are having kids with these younger women, thats what we need to look out for. We do not need to pay more attention to two couples that are harmless to each other, especially gays.
In this day and age, more and more teens are discovering their sexuality at an earlier age and kind of know which way they are going to go. I have two very good friends one who was (and is today) a lesbian. In high school she had to hide her sexual orintation from her parents and her teachers although most of her classmates knew and were supprotive of her. Today, she married to her partner. The law is the law and sadly some people choose to decide what is "best" for their kids refusing to accept the fact that maybe their kids already know as far as their sexual preference. At 13 or 14 the kid may still be in that exploritory age and I I can't fault the parents but an open discussion here with both parents could of solved this. Times have changed people. I am not saying it is right or wrong and the laws are there to protect our young people, but in this case, I think common sense over "How dare you" should of taken place first. They are only 4 years apart in age and the one just turned 18 so make it 3. Come on now. If it had been an 18 year old boy and a 14 year old girl this would have taken on a whole diffrent meaning. This is not the 1950's anymore.
she sure does have the psyco girlfriend look down gives me the willies
Since this "relationship" started while Miss Kate Hunt was still a minor (17), I truly believe that her mother should be charged with negligent supervision of a minor child.Mom is now afraid because her lesbo daughter maybe convicted of a felony, that being unlawful sexual relations with a minor. As for Kate, shame shame on her for corrupting a 14 year old girl. A 14 year old girls should not even be allowed to "date" much less with another female.I truly hope that Kate, this lesbo, is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and she really deserves to do some serious jail time, perhaps some older female inmates could "show her the ropes"The prosecutor should also INSIST that Kate register as a CONVICTED SEX OFFENDER with the state of Florida
Another example of Our Sick Society. All these States passing laws allowing same sex marriage, all the Rights of Gays and in General just Moral Decay. The mother of the 18yr Old can see her daughter as havihng done no wrong since they were both girls What if the kids had been of different sex- Boy/Girl,Teacher/Student etc. The Gays want Double Standards for the Laws, forget that it was an Adult Performing a Sex Act on a Minor. A Sex Offender is a SEX OFFENDER, If these charges are dropped Justice will not be served, and the Younger Girls Parents should sue, and I bet they wouldn't have trouble finding any Lawyer that would handle the Suit. And this is a case that should ultimately go before the Supreme Court.
seems this is only one side of the story....has to be more than this mothers side...I wonder what the others parents have to say ? 2 sides to every story...then ... there is the truth....
According to the arrest affidavit (which can be found on TCPalm), the older girl was 18 during the entire relationship, the younger girl was 14 during the entire relationship. Hunt was incriminated during a phone call in which the younger girl called her and elicited a response from Hunt admitting to having had intercourse while police were monitoring the call. The age difference is 18 and 14, NOT 17 and 15. The fact that it is a same sex relationship likely is what brought about the lighter plea deal for Ms Hunt. Most 18 year old boys get harsher penalties in these circumstances.
The problem is selective prosecution, not because of what they would do to an 18 year old boy in the same situation, but what they would do to an 18 year old girl, in a relationship with a 15 year old boy. I wonder how many cases like that the State's Attorney has pursued. Yes, that's right, zero. It's definitely bias because she's gay.
