William told investigators that Adam had obtained William’s handgun and threatened to commit suicide. William got the gun away from Adam, but then Adam threatened William with a closed fist and aggressive stance. William said he was in fear for his life and fired one shot at his son. He then called for help.
VCSO said in a statement that no decision has been made yet on whether or not charges will be filed until all information and evidence can be reviewed and the results of the autopsy are available. At this time, investigators say that it appears William’s shooting of his son, Adam Shope, may have been justified.
