Florida Man Not Arrested For Shooting and Killing Son

ORANGE CITY, Florida — The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a mobile home near Orange City Tuesday night in response to a report of a shooting and found a 39-year-old man dead inside.  Deputies say that the shooter, 68-year-old William Shope, was on scene and willingly spoke with investigators.

When the Sheriff’s Office was called out to 2500 N. Volusia Ave., Lot #36 at about 6:45 p.m., deputies found Adam in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to his chest.  Paramedics pronounced him dead on scene at about 7 p.m.

William told investigators that Adam had obtained William’s handgun and threatened to commit suicide. William got the gun away from Adam, but then Adam threatened William with a closed fist and aggressive stance. William said he was in fear for his life and fired one shot at his son. He then called for help.

VCSO said in a statement that no decision has been made yet on whether or not charges will be filed until all information and evidence can be reviewed and the results of the autopsy are available. At this time, investigators say that it appears William’s shooting of his son, Adam Shope, may have been justified.

Both men lived together. No one else was at the home and William was not injured during the incident, deputies say.
