PORT CANAVERAL, Florida — According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s office, beach cleanup volunteers were collecting trash along the beach near Jetty Park in Port Canaveral this morning when two suspicious plastic bottles containing liquid with rubber hoses attached were found. The volunteers discarded the items into trash containers and then realized the bottles were generating smoke. That’s when the Port Canaveral Police Department and Canaveral Fire-Rescue were called to the scene.
Recognizing the bottles were likely hazardous, Port Canaveral Police requested the response of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad. As a precaution, the beach was evacuated and the area searched by law enforcement, fire and Ocean Rescue personnel.
As a result of the search, Sheriff’s Lieutenant Mike Scully said in a release that two additional bottles of similar design and contents were subsequently located by Cheri Down Park in neighboring Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The bottles were examined by BCSO Bomb Squad personnel and determined to be drug related. The bottles and contents appear to be the highly toxic and hazardous byproduct from a clandestine methamphetamine lab.
