Fatal Motorcycle Crash In Merritt Island

MERRITT ISLAND, Florida —  The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a 25-year-old Clinton, Mississippi man died as a result of injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash that occurred at 1 a.m. Thursday morning on Pineda Causeway (State Road 404) near the intersection of South Tropical Trail (State Road 3) on Merritt Island, Florida.

According to FHP, a 2009 Suzuki motorcycle was traveling westbound on the Pineda Causeway when, for an unknown reason, the driver failed to negotiate a curve and drove off the roadway.

The motorcycle then crashed into a barrier wall and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle and struck a guardrail.

FHP has not released the man’s identity pending next-of-kin notification

All westbound lanes on SR 404 were shut down during the early morning hours while FHP conducted its investigation, but the roadway has since re-opened.

UPDATE:  The identity of the driver has been released.  He has been identified by FHP as Charles Bergt.
