Researchers at the University of South Carolina say they have discovered a new species of hammerhead shark.
According to findings published by ichthyologist Joe Quattro in the scientific journal Zootaxa, the new shark species is named Sphyrna gilberti or also referred to as “The Carolina hammerhead.”
The Carolina hammerhead is indistinguishable from the common scalloped hammerhead pictured above.  The difference in the newly-discovered hammerhead shark is that it has less vertebrae than the common scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini).

Although all hammerhead sharks are migratory, researchers say that due to the species’ rarity, it is unknown at this time how far the habitable range of the new shark species extends from South Carolina.
