Brevard County Lifeguard Tryouts Saturday

ROCKLEDGE, Florida — Brevard County Ocean Rescue will host the first of two open tryouts next week for seasonal lifeguards, looking to fill at least 50 positions. Those hired on as ocean lifeguards will work from March to October this year.

Those trying out should be at Rockledge High School by 7 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2014.  A second tryout will be on March 22.  Candidates must be at the swimming pool by 7 a.m. or they will not be permitted to test.

While no lifeguarding experience is necessary, candidates must be over the age of 16 on the day of the tryout and possess strong swimming skills. All candidates must bring a valid driver’s License, Social Security card, appropriate swim attire, a towel and running shoes.

Candidates will be required to swim 500 yards (20 lengths of the pool) in less than 10 minutes, complete a 2-mile run on a track in under 20 minutes and perform a physical agility test that includes push-ups. Advanced registration is not required, however applicants are reminded that testing will begin promptly and anyone arriving after testing begins will not be permitted to try out.

If selected, completion of the hiring process is dependent on the candidate’s ability to pass a background test and successful completion of Ocean Rescue’s paid training academy. The starting pay for ocean lifeguards is $9.46/hour.
