Great White Shark Off Brevard County Coast

UPDATE: Great White Shark Off Miami

PORT CANAVERAL, Florida — A great white shark weighing over 2,000 pounds that was tagged with a radio transponder to be tracked by satellite has had its latest ping locations off the coast of north Brevard County, Florida.

The 14-foot great white shark, named Katharine, that was tagged off Cape Cod last August, has steadily been making her way southward along the U.S. Atlantic Seaboard.

Katharine now remains just off the coast from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s Space Launch Complexes 40 and 41 as of 2 a.m. on January 11, 2014.

If Katharine’s recent southward trek continues, she could be off the Kennedy Space Center launch pads, Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, or Cocoa Beach coast during this weekend.

According to NOAA fisheries, female great white sharks are believed to mature when they are about 13-14 feet and can reach sizes up to about 21 feet in length.  Great white sharks can be found off the Atlantic coast of the United States from as far north as Newfoundland, Canada, to  as far south as the east coast of Florida – but rarely go into the Gulf of Mexico.

  • Katherine is not a aggressive man eater at this time, however she does inspect her food before eating it so keep your eyes open, I've had two very close encounter with her on two occasions, she is a pussycat compared to others around the world. She may bite by mistake but she is not the kind of Great White who is going to devour you in my opinion.
