Melbourne Police Officer Shot During Arrest

Kimbrough
MELBOURNE, Florida — A Melbourne Police Officer was shot on Saturday as he was arresting two men for breaking into a home.

At approximately 11:51 a.m. on Saturday, the Melbourne Police Department received a call about an in-progress burglary to an apartment at the Villas at Harbor City, located at 1508 E. University Boulevard. The caller told dispatchers that two men used a knife to pry open a back door to the apartment before entering it.

As officers began to arrive in the area, the witness observed the two men run from the apartment and hide in a nearby utility shed.  The responding officers surrounded the shed, announced their presence, and ordered the occupants out.  After multiple announcements with no response, the officers opened the shed door and found two men hiding inside.

As they were now being brought out of the shed, police say that one of the suspects, Termaine Kimbrough, physically resisted Lt. Daniel Lynch.  During the struggle, Kimbrough smacked Lt. Lynch’s firearm which he was holding in his hand.  The firearm discharged and the bullet struck Lt. Lynch in the lower left leg.  Other officers on scene were able to subdue Kimbrough and take him into custody.  The other suspect, Antwoine Lee, was taken into custody without further incident.

Lt. Lynch was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released.  Kimbrough and Lee were both charged with burglary and theft. Kimbrough was also charged with resisting an officer.
