Signs have been posted since March 10 to prepare motorists of the pending closure. Brevard County Public Works Director John Denninghoff said the delay will hopefully provide the traveling public additional time to plan alternate routes to use once the project gets underway the night of April 7.
While announcing a two-week delay, Denninghoff said plans remain to have the project completed by June 11 as previously announced.
The collapsed pipe was first discovered in late February and emergency repairs were made. However, drainage in the area is a concern and efforts are being made to complete the work before the rainy season is well underway and before the peak of the hurricane season.
“We will remain vigilant to the degree possible, regarding the drainage status for the area north of Palm Bay Road to minimize potential for flooding in the event of severe weather,” Denninghoff said. “We are hopeful that drivers and businesses will be able to use the additional time prior to the road closure to thoroughly prepare for the impacts to traffic flow in the area.”
