PALM BAY, Florida. – Beginning at 10 p.m. Monday, April 7, Brevard County Public Works crews will shut down a half-mile section of Palm Bay Road for replacement of a collapsed stormwater drain pipe at the roadway’s intersection with Minton Road in Palm Bay, Florida.
It’s expected crews will be putting out construction barrels and barricades until about 5 a.m. Tuesday, but work will begin immediately after that to dig out the drain pipe, which runs beneath all lanes of Palm Bay Road. The project to replace the collapsed pipe with 18 sections of concrete culvert will take about 9 week and cost an estimated $850,000.
In the meantime, motorists who travel the area to work or in and out of residential areas and businesses along the busy corridor will find access to Palm Bay Road completely blocked between Minton Road and Norfolk Parkway.
Minton Road will remain open for north/south traffic, but turn lanes off Minton Road onto Palm Bay Road will be closed. Norfolk Parkway is the designated detour route.
Once work begins at 10 p.m. Monday, Palm Bay Road will be closed in both directions from Minton Road to Athens Drive. The westbound lane of Palm Bay Road will be closed between Athens Drive and Norfolk Parkway, but the eastbound lane of Palm Bay Road will be open from Athens Drive to Norfolk Parkway. Athens Drive will also remain open for north/south traffic.
Bus Routes Affected
The closure of Palm Bay Road is expected to cause schedule delays to bus route service in Palm Bay, West Melbourne and Melbourne beginning on Tuesday, April 8. The affected routes are:
• Route 23 – West Palm Bay
• Route 25 – Palm Bay Connector
• Route 27 – East Palm Bay
Detours due to the closure and expected traffic congestion on Norfolk Parkway will alter the travel of the bus routes servicing the Hammock Landing Transfer Point. Delays to the bus routes are expected.
Space Coast Area Transit will not wait for buses that are late and buses may miss transfers. Space Coast Area Transit advises riders to take an earlier bus to ensure arrival at their destination on time.
