MELBOURNE, Florida — The U.S. military surplus M-16 rifle that was unaccounted for during a recent Melbourne Police Department inventory has been located.
According to Melbourne Police, the Colt M-16A1 was in the possession of a currently employed Melbourne police officer and was in a secure location within the officer’s residence. The rifle had been issued to the officer in the past; however, due to an oversight in equipment issuance and inventory procedures it was missed in the audit, police say.
The Melbourne Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident, shifting its attention towards existing inventory control systems to identify and eliminate weaknesses, to improve the system overall, and to determine appropriate accountability.
