Melbourne Police Save Fisherman

MELBOURNE, Florida — Just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, the Melbourne Police Department received an emergency call stating that a fisherman was in distress on the north side of the Melbourne Causeway, located at 1350 E. New Haven Avenue in Melbourne, Florida.
Witnesses told police that the fisherman fell into the river and was swept away by the strong current. When officers arrived on scene, the fisherman was approximately 150 yards off shore and appeared to be tired and struggling to stay afloat.  With no other immediate resources available, Field Training Officer Daniel Michaud and Officer David Ross entered into the water and swam out to the fisherman. Working together, the officers were able to gain control of the fisherman and assist him back to shore.

The fisherman was later identified as Michael Moore, 60, who was treated on scene by the Melbourne Fire Department and released without further incident.
