Brevard County Sheriff's Office Saves Sea Turtle At Port Canaveral

PORT CANAVERAL, Florida – On Monday morning, the American Guard Services (AGS) reported a sick or injured sea turtle that was observed in the area of cruise terminals 8 and 10 in Port Canaveral, Florida.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit responded and coordinated efforts with Maritime Security Officer Jonathan Lopez to the turtle’s exact location near the shoreline. SeaPort Security Manager John Brady, Corporal Jim Zibell and MSO Lopez identified the turtle as a loggerhead that appeared to be severely distressed.
According to BCSO, the sea turtle was struggling to keep it’s head above water to breathe so MSO Lopez gently pulled the turtle to shore and placed it into a position where it’s head was completely out of the water and could easily breathe on it’s own. MSO Lopez then arranged a large plastic pallet to shade the turtle from the sun as they awaited the arrival of the Sea Turtle Preservation Society.
After volunteers with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society arrived, BCSO personnel assisted in carrying the loggerhead to the transport vehicle where it was taken to Sea World in Orlando, Florida for emergency medical treatment and further evaluation.

“I could not be more proud of our team who continue to amaze me everyday with their efforts, professionalism and compassion,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey in a statement. “Port Canaveral is now one of the busiest Ports in the world, where millions of visitors converge annually in Brevard County to enjoy the beautiful scenery, restaurants, businesses, cruise industry and wildlife! Today they were able to witness the true commitment of those who stand ready to ensure that everyone, including the wildlife are safe!!”
