Florida Students' 2015 ACT Scores Below National Average

Brevard County students scored lower on the ACT than the national average but higher than Florida’s statewide average.

BREVARD COUNTY, Florida – Students at Florida schools scored far below their U.S. counterparts on the the ACT test this year.

The national average ACT composite score for 2015 was a 21 while Florida’s average composite score was a 19.9.

Florida students’ worst average score was in English at 18.9 which was 1.5 points below the national average of 20.4.

The Sunshine State’s 19.5 average score in science was 1.4 points below the national average of 20.9.

Florida’s math score was only slightly better at 19.6, but still far below the national average of 20.8.

Florida students’ best average score on the ACT was in reading at 21 which was only .4 points below the national average.

Locally, Brevard County Public School students scored slightly lower than the national average on their 2015 ACT composite scores with a 20.7, but that score was still 1.8 points higher than the Florida average of 19.9.

“Brevard Public Schools is one of the few school districts in Florida to require every 11th grade student take the ACT College Readiness Assessment,” BPS Superintendent Dr. Desmond K. Blackburn stated in a press release. “It is a significant achievement when comparing our scores against only college bound students from across the state.”

BPS assessed 5,025 students in 2015. While the composite score for BPS dipped from 20.8 in 2014 to 20.7 in 2015, it remained consistently within a .3 spread since 2011. BPS students increased performance in science by .3.

“This data demonstrates the significant dedication of our staff with consistent achievement for our students,” Blackburn adds. “We will work closely with instructional staff to evaluate the data and develop strategies to address the drop in our reading, mathematics and English scores.”
