Tornadoes in South Florida, 'Sharknado' in Cocoa Beach

COCOA BEACH, Florida – Although the National Weather Service issued tornado watch for Brevard County overnight and into Sunday morning, there have been no reported tornado touchdowns in Central Florida. The most damaging weather, including reports of at least two tornadoes, occurred in southwest Florida near Sarasota and Fort Myers.

The Space Coast did, however, experience strong winds and record-breaking rainfall this morning. The wind gusts managed to topple over an iconic Beach Wave surf shop shark sign located at the intersection of State Roads 520 and A1A in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

The sign, which has a shark statue embedded on its support stand with a half-bitten surfboard or human leg placed in the shark’s mouth, toppled over while leaving the shark intact. The resulting damage leaves the impression that the sign had been hit by a “sharknado.”

FPL crews turned off power due to the exposure of bare wires and Cocoa Beach Fire crews ensured that there were no other hazards to the public from the sign debris.
