MELBOURNE BEACH, Florida – The POWERBALL winners from Brevard County, Florida came forward today at 2 p.m. Eastern Time to claim their share of the historic $1.5 billion jackpot.
Florida Lottery Secretary Tom Delacenserie presented the trustee of The Nickel 95 Trust with a check for a one-time, lump-sum payment in the amount of $327,835,077.79. The trustee is Maureen Smith, 70, who has been a resident of Melbourne Beach, Florida since 1980.
Smith’s husband, David Kaltschmidt, 55, was a manufacturing engineer for Northrop Grumman, an aerospace defense contract but is “now retiring.” He said that he arrived late to work the morning after the drawing and that his co-workers suspected that he had won the POWERBALL jackpot, which he had to deny. Kaltschmidt said that he lost 10 pounds from pacing at night during the time that it took to prepare to claim the jackpot.
