For the 25th consecutive year, the family-friendly Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in America, according to the American Kennel Club’s 2015 registration stats. Although Labs are currently the top dogs in the United States, several cities in Florida have a different top dog that could reflect how people from different parts of the U.S. have settled into particular regions of the Sunshine State.

The French Bulldog is the most popular dog in Miami, New York, and San Diego. It ranks #6 in the U.S. Credit: Wikicommons
Perhaps due to the large number of New York transplants, Miami’s most popular dog is the same as NYC’s – the French Bulldog – which ranks #6 among the most popular dogs in the U.S.

The German Shepard is the #1 dog in Orlando and Jacksonville, Florida. It is the second-most popular dog breed in America. Credit: Wikicommons.

In Orlando (Central Florida) and Jacksonville (North Florida), the German Shepard is man’s #1 best friend. That area of Florida is where a large number of German-Americans have been settling since the late 1800’s from three states where the German Shepard currently reigns supreme (Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio). The German Shepard comes in at #2 among the most popular dogs in the U.S.

Palm Beach is the only city in the U.S. where the Poodle is the most popular dog. Credit: Wikicommons

In Palm Beach, where retirees have sold their single-family homes in other parts of the country in exchange for a condominium in warmer weather, the intelligent Poodle is the number one favorite. Nationally, Poodles are the 8th most popular dog.

Tampa was the only Florida city where the favorite dog was the same as the U.S.
