MELBOURNE, Florida – A Palm Bay man was killed and West Melbourne man is in serious condition following a crash that occurred just after 2 a.m. near mile marker 188 on I-95 in Brevard County, Florida.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 29-year-old Justin Looman was driving a 2012 Jeep SUV southbound in the middle travel lane on I-95.
Meanwhile, 53-year-old Gary Smith was driving a 1993 Jeep SUV southbound on I-95 in the right, outside lane. Looman then merged over into the right lane where Smith was traveling. The front, right of Looman’s Jeep collided into the left, rear of Smith’s Jeep.
Upon impact, Smith’s Jeep overturned several times and traveled down the right embankment where it came to rest on it’s left side. Smith, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected into a nearby wooded area. After the impact, Looman’s Jeep traveled further south and went off of the roadway and into the tree line. Smith was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida where he was later pronounced deceased.
Looman was taken to Viera Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.
The investigation and charges are pending, FHP says.
