BREVARD COUNTY, Florida – There will be no Early Release on Wednesday during the first week of school at Brevard County Public Schools in the 2016-17 school calendar year. 


According to comments on social media, there has been some confusion for parents because the Brevard Federation of Teachers union pushed for every Wednesday to be an early release day during their contract negotiations last year. 

The BPS administration acquiesced to the union’s demand and made every every Wednesday an early release day during the 2015-16 school year, leading to many parents to assume that this first Wednesday during the 2016-17 school year would be an Early Release Day. But that is not the case:

There will be no Early Release Day on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 for Brevard County Public Schools. Regular school hours will take place on Wednesday, August 10, 2016.

All other Wednesdays during the school year will be Early Release days in 2016-17, per the teacher’s union contract with Brevard Public Schools and the BPS District Calendar.

Like last year, teachers will be paid more for performing less instructional time for students than in past years due to, in large part, the passage of the half-cent sales tax.

Private and charter school calendars may differ on a school-by-school basis.
